Early Jewish scholars disagreed on how to light the menorah. The School of Shammai argued that all eight candles should be lit on the first night of Chanukah and then one fewer for each subsequent night. The school of Hillel argued for increasing the candle count each night, which is typically how menorahs are lit today.
